4 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD MOW LOW IN THE FALL

A GOOD GRASS HEIGHT FOR FALL IS 2 1/2 INCHES.
DON’T GO TOO LOW. SCALPING YOUR LAWN MAY CAUSE DAMAGE!

Now that it’s fall, its time to lower your mower blade! When the seasons change, its a good idea to make sure you’re cutting your grass at the best height possible. How high or low to cut your grass will depend on the time of year, for various reasons. When fall hits its beneficial to LOWER your mower blade. Below are 4 reasons why it is beneficial to mow low in the fall.

TO GET MORE SUNLIGHT TO THE CROWN OF THE PLANT

With the cooler temperatures, we do not need to provide as much shade to crown of the grass, unlike the summer months. This is because we don’t have to worry as much about heat stress and drought.

TO GET MORE AIR CIRCULATION

Fall usually has more moisture and less heat. Air circulation will help dry up any excess moisture that is in the turf. Also, it will aid in helping to prevent various turf diseases.

TO PREVENT SNOW MOLD FROM DEVELOPING

Snow mold occurs when it snows and the ground has not yet froze. This can leave unwanted moisture trapped below the blades of grass that have been weighed down by the snow. You will not notice snow mold until the spring thaw.

TO PROMOTE SPRING GROWTH

In spring, your turf will come out of dormancy. If it begins at a good height it will be ready to bounce back, growing and greening up!

HOW LOW SHOULD I MOW THIS FALL?

With fall comes the cooler temperatures. With the cooler temperatures, comes needed changes to our lawn care routine. Theses needed changes include the height at which we set our lawn mowers.

A good height to cut your grass would be approximately 2 1/2″.
In the summer months you want your grass to be 3 1/2″ to 4″, but in the fall you want it approximately an inch shorter than the summer months.

Do not scalp your lawn!

You want it shorter than normal, but you do not want to scalp it.
